Hook Haul: the trip down sets up the catch on the way back
Guide a hook around jellyfish, collect fish during the ascent, and invest the haul in line, hook, and lure upgrades. Hook Haul turns a short cast into a route-planning puzzle.

The same water asks two different questions
Hook Haul begins with a small boat, an empty hook, and fish moving at different depths. Casting starts the descent. You steer the hook around jellyfish on the way down, then catch fish as it reels back toward the surface. The change of direction also changes your objective: first protect the depth of the cast, then make the return journey valuable.
The current Oppoz build displays coins, best haul, and depth. It is a compact fishing arcade game with a clear cycle of cast, descend, retrieve, and sell. Each trip gives you a new chance to choose a route through moving targets. The important decision is not simply whether a fish is nearby, but whether it belongs in the limited catch you are bringing home.
How to play a cast
Click or press Space to cast on desktop. Move the mouse or use the left and right arrow keys to steer. On touch devices, tap to cast and drag to guide the hook sideways. The hook descends automatically until it reaches the line limit, then begins reeling in. You continue steering during both phases, so the return is an active part of the trip.
Jellyfish make the descent more than a waiting period. A sting interrupts the drop and starts an early reel, giving you less depth to work with. During the ascent, another sting can let the most recently caught fish escape. A route that looked profitable can therefore become less useful if it passes directly through a hazard on the way back.
A full hook is not always the best hook
Fish are caught during retrieval when they enter the hook’s effective radius, until its capacity is full. Different species have different values and depth ranges in the current source. Sardines and clownfish populate shallower water, while other species become available deeper down. Increasing your reach into the water changes which catches can appear along the route.
The game also rewards consecutive matching species in the haul. Its sale calculation increases the value of a fish when it continues the same-species chain. That means catch order can matter. Filling every slot immediately is straightforward, but leaving room for a valuable opportunity or continuing a chain introduces a more selective way to steer. Pearls provide another collectible along the journey.
Upgrades change what you can plan
Three upgrade categories appear in the interface. Line extends maximum depth, Hooks increases the number of fish you can carry, and Lure enlarges the catching radius. Each changes a different constraint. More depth opens another part of the water; more capacity makes room for a longer haul; a stronger lure makes nearby fish easier to collect during retrieval.
My analysis of the design is that these choices make the next cast a small experiment. If you often reach capacity early, another hook upgrade addresses a different problem from a longer line. If good fish repeatedly pass just outside reach, lure strength may feel more relevant. This interpretation follows the mechanics rather than claiming a documented development motive or a guaranteed best purchase order.
Why the return trip stays interesting
The satisfying part of a cast is seeing a plan turn into a visible collection. You recognise a group of fish during the descent, then try to meet it on the way up without losing the catch to a jellyfish. Moving targets prevent the exact route from being automatic. The best-haul record supplies a concrete result to compare with the next attempt.
Start by learning when the descent becomes the ascent, and practise avoiding one jellyfish cleanly. Then watch how the catch order affects your sale before spending coins on the constraint you most want to change. The gallery shows genuine frames from the official Oppoz preview.
